Jeff Gray is a bass player with over 20 years experience playing and teaching music. He is a graduate of Western Washington University’s music department and studied jazz improvisation with legendary bassist Chuck Israels (Bill Evans, John Coltrane), and symphonic and concert orchestra under the direction of Roger Briggs (Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, composer).
Jeff began his musical endeavor in 1982 growing up playing percussion in drum corps in Georgia and throughout the South. After playing many different instruments, he settled on the bass (both upright and electric) as his primary instrument. He found that it was the perfect combination of percussion, rhythm and melody that is evident in his astute grasp of the rockabilly slap style and jazz.
He teaches many different styles from beginner to advanced. Main styles include rockabilly slap, country, western swing, jazz, bluegrass, surf, jump blues, Motown, and many others. This includes music theory and sight-reading
He toured for many years sharing the stage with acts such as The Brian Setzer Trio (The Stray Cats), Dick Dale, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. He has also recorded with dozens of local Bellingham musicians and bands. Some of there include the Footstompin’ Trio, the Bucklebusters, New York Jimmy and the Jive Five, the Honeymoon’s over, Robert Sarizan Blake, the High Wide and Handsome Band, as well as the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra.
He now resides in Bellingham and is accepting students of all levels.
