2007 – Currently

Owner - Payne Formula DesignsÓ, PFDä / Guitar Doctor USAä

David Payne is a 30+-year veteran of the music industry as well as a 25+-year veteran of musical instrument design, manufacturing, repair and service. David is also a certified quality auditor specializing in ISO 9001 Standards (design, manufacture and service).  He has earned a reputation as a true professional recording/performing artist, producer, teacher, an innovative designer/builder, a reliable and efficient repair technician/consultant, and a mentor to several new artists and students.

Known as “Payne Formula Designs”,  “Guitar Doctor USA” and introducing new products to the M.I. industry, most recently The Zebra Nutä.  David owns his own businesses of repairing musical instruments and designing/producing stringed instruments, instrument innovations, guitar tools and miniature stringed instruments.  David has been featured in “The Klipsun” (March 06’,Western Washington University), ‘Popular Woodworking’ (April/May 86’) and ‘The Miniature Collector’ (Summer 87’) magazines.  David has worked for several musical instrument manufacturers (Alembic Inc., Wildwood Banjos, Mesa Boogie Amplifiers, Michael Dolan Custom Guitars), and many known artists, such as… 

            David has worked as a service/repair technician or an employee for such top-tier musical instrument manufacturers as Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, National Resophonic, B.C. Rich, Epiphone, Tacoma, Orpheum, Garrison, Steinberger, Tobias, Kramer, Gretsch, Guild, Jackson, Peavey, Alembic, Wild Wood Banjos and Mesa Boogie… and personally maintained, repaired and customized the instruments of legends of contemporary music such as the late John Entwistle of The Who, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, John Lodge of The Moody Blues and Stanley Clarke.

David has provided ‘on location’ tech service for a variety of artists, including Jason Newstead of Metallica, John Hiatt, Walter Trout and the late Freddy Fender.

David has an extensive background in industrial quality management and auditing in commercial and military applications; Certified IRCA Lead Auditor / Senior Auditor specializing in ISO 9000 Standards of design, manufacture and service, Ashbrooke Quality Certificate # 05-0014.

The Guitar Doctor’s practice is not limited to guitars and basses.  Over the years he has serviced many types of stringed instruments including banjos, mandolins, lutes, zithers, citterns, bouzoukis, violins, cellos, upright (double) basses, ukuleles, and more.

            David has provided ‘on location’ tech service for a variety of artists, including Metallica, John Hiatt, Walter Trout and Freddy Fender.
